In what promises to be a diverse international face-off, 25 countries to date have confirmed their entries vying for the title of FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior World champions in Halifax. Over 30 men’s and 30 women’s teams are set to take to the sand on the city’s waterfront venue Aug. 31st – Sept. 4th.
Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, San Marino, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the USA will have at least one men’s or one women’s team competing, with some countries entering multiple men’s and women’s teams.
Event director Derek Martin has great confidence in Halifax’s capacity to successfully host major international sporting events. “This is a reflection of the calibre of tournament that we as a city are able to attract, Halifax is a tremendous sports town and our entire organizing committee is experiencing that first hand with the support we’ve received since we first announced our intention to bring the Junior World Championships here.”
The tournament schedule begins with a qualification round on Aug. 31, followed by two days of pool play (Sept. 1-2) leading up to the play downs (Sept. 3) and medal games (Sept. 4). Games are scheduled throughout the day 9a.m.-6p.m., rounding off with an 11a.m.-4p.m. wrap-up for the title games on Sunday.
Ticket packages for all five days of play as well as a “Long Weekend Package” are currently on sale, single tickets will be available starting Aug. 25. Event manager Chris Larsen is hoping everyone in the city is able to take in some of the international event.
“We’ve structured our pricing to be accessible for everyone from families to students as well as the corporate community and children under five are free.”
Full tournament packages for the entire week start at only $40 and single day tickets will be available at $10 per day. All tickets can be purchased at www.sandjamhalifax.ca. For corporate tables, contact Sports & Entertainment Atlantic at 444-3773 ext. 5 or email angie@seatlantic.ca.
