Canadians win silver at junior beach volleyball worlds

HALIFAX — The Canadian duo of Victoria Altomare and Melissa Humana-Paredes were upset in the final of the FIVB under-21 world beach volleyball championships on Sunday.
Altomare and Humana-Paredes, both of Toronto, came into the event as the top seeds and entered the final on a four-game winning streak. Nina Betschart and Joana Heidrich of Switzerland, seeded eighth, snapped the streak and won the gold with a 21-16, 14-21, 15-11 win.
On the men’s side, Canadians Garrett May and Danny Demyanenko lost the bronze-medal match to Vitor Felipe and Marcus Carvalhaes of Brazil. The Canadians were also the top seeds, but it was the fourth-seeded Brazilians who won 23-21, 14-21, 15-13.
In the gold-medal match, 20th seeds Valeriy Samoday and Sergiy Popov of Ukraine defeated Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak of Poland 22-20, 19-21, 15-12.
