Canadians move on in beach volleyball

HALIFAX — Three Canadian duos reached the quarter-finals Friday at the FIVB world under-21 beach volleyball championships.
On the men’s side, top-seeded Torontonians Garrett May and Danny Demyanenko and sixth seeds Fiodar Kazhamiaka of Waterloo, Ont., and William Sidgwick of Toronto moved on from the round of 16, while No. 1 seeds Victoria Altomare and Melissa Humana-Paredes, both of Toronto, advanced on the women’s side.
May and Demyanenko, who finished 2-1 in the round robin, defeated Oliver Kaszas and Sebastian Kaszas of Denmark 18-21, 21-16, 15-12.
Sidgwick and Kazhamiaka won their fourth consecutive match, defeating Henry Glockner and Dominik Stork of Germany 21-13, 21-15.
Altomare and Humana-Paredes won their final round-robin match early Friday over Martie Tauboll and Camilla Nergard of Norway 21-10, 21-9 and then dumped Teresa Andessner and Christina Wallinger of Austria 21-14, 21-15 in the round of 16.
Nick Del Bianco and Ben Chow of Surrey, B.C., advanced to the playoff round at 2-1, but were eliminated by Haralds Regza and Armands Abolin of Latvia.
Alexandra Hudson of Mississauga, Ont., and Charlotte Sider of St. Stephen, N.B., and Sarah Gosselin of Granby, Que., and Sara Robichaud of Gatineau, Que., did not make the playoffs.
