STFX University and S|E|A’s Set All-Time Attendance Record for the U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Championship
May 15, 2023
Halifax, Nova Scotia (May 15, 2023)
St. Francis Xavier University (STFX) and Sports & Entertainment Atlantic (S|E|A) are proud to announce the 2023 U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Championship broke the all-time record for Final 8 weekend attendance. Over the three day tournament, 40,092 people took in university basketball at the Scotiabank Centre from March 10-12, 2023.
This surpasses the previous attendance record of 39,400 from 2001, which was also set in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in which the St. Francis Xaiver defeated Brandon University in an 83-76 overtime thriller.

It was the Ravens’ fourth national championship in a row, their 11th in the past 12 years, and their 17th in the last 20 years, extending their basketball dynasty.
Aiden Warnholtz of the Ravens was named tournament MVP, as he scored 23 points and handed out 11 assists in the championship game, including an incredible three-point shot to tie the game at the end of regulation. It was Head Coach Taffe Charles' third consecutive national championship.
The game set a U SPORT record for most points scored by a single team, and the highest number of combined points in the title game. The tournament featured 11 games, comprising eight championship games and three consolation games. All games were played in a double-header format except the championship game on Sunday, March 12.
In conjunction with the Championship, long-time STFX coach Steve ‘Coach K’ Konchalski served as the Honourary Chair of the event. Coach K retired in March, 2021 after serving 46 seasons as X-Men Basketball head coach. The winningest men’s basketball coach in Canadian university sport history, he won three national championships and nine AUS conference championships during his time at STFX. The 2001 U SPORTS Coach of the Year, he was honoured on six occasions as AUS Coach of the Year, leading the X-Men to 18 U SPORTS championship appearances and 42 AUS playoff appearances as he retired with 919 career wins and a .615 win percentage.
Coach K also served as head coach of Team Canada for four years (1995-98) and was an assistant coach for 16 years prior. Coaching in three Olympic Games, Steve has been a member of Canada Basketball’s Counsel of Excellence since 2009. He was a member of coaching staff of the Canadian U19 team that won the 2017 World Championship in Cairo, Egypt and was a Senior Advisor of Basketball Operations with the Newfoundland Growlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).
The 2023 tournament featured the Carleton Ravens defeating the host St. FX X-Men in an instant classic. The final went to double overtime and showcased elite shotmaking from both sides, resulting in the Ravens winning 109-104.
